The New Soap Opera: Exploring the Global Rise of Short Dramas

New research from Snap Inc. and Ipsos reveals how short dramas have evolved into a multi-billion dollar vertical and that Snapchat is the platform to find  high-value, conversion-ready audiences.

The new soap opera has officially arrived. Known as short dramas, these vertical, episodic videos pack high-stakes storytelling into bite-sized clips ranging from 30 seconds to five minutes. As viewership continues to expand globally, this snackable format is rapidly reshaping modern digital entertainment.

Recent research conducted by Snapchat in partnership with Ipsos investigates the popularity of these bite-sized thrillers and uncovers how these videos are already a daily part of viewers’ lives in the US, UK and Saudi Arabia.

Social Sharing Fuels Global Expansion

Social channels have accelerated the rise of short dramas across emerging regions. Casual viewers become loyal superfans through word-of-mouth recommendations and sharing among friends and family.

Audiences discover short dramas through their social circles, with recommendations from peers and trusted creators driving the desire to watch their first series 1:

After their initial introduction, consumers’ viewing of short dramas becomes a shared experience enriched by social engagement with other fans. When short drama viewers see a clip on social media, they seek out ways to share and connect with friends and family about the content both online and in-person:

  • 74% share the clip with friends & family.

  • 74% discuss the series in-person with family and friends.

  • 69% share a comment or reaction to their Story.

  • 64% snap a photo using a show-branded AR Lens. 2

Primed for Conversion: How Snapchat Clips Entice Viewers’ Interest to Download

While social platforms generally excel at driving initial awareness, Snapchat sets itself apart by converting interest into intent.

On other feed-based platforms, viewers report that their top next step after watching short drama clips is searching for free recaps elsewhere. On Snapchat, however, clips and ads drive direct action, with Snapchatters most frequently stating they would download a dedicated short drama app to keep watching. 2

Crucially, those downloads translate into real revenue. Snapchatters don't just install the app to browse—they come ready to spend. Compared to non-Snapchatters, they are:

  • 1.4x more likely to prefer buying in-app coins to unlock episodes.

  • 1.2x more likely to pay a subscription fee for unlimited show access. 2

Snapchatters Love the Drama

Behind Snapchat’s conversion efficiency as a platform is an audience deeply immersed in the short drama ecosystem.

Among those Snapchatters who are watching short dramas, over half are watching episodes daily, 1.7x higher than non-Snapchat viewers. 2 Viewing sessions on Snapchat frequently turn into extended watch periods: Snapchatters are 1.3x more likely than non-Snapchatters to watch for longer than 30 minutes in a single sitting. 2

How to Unlock High-Value Viewers

To keep these daily watchers engaged, advertisers and creators can capitalize on the content and genre trends that resonate most with Snapchatters:

  • The Opening Act: Captivate Audiences with Cliffhangers.
Hook viewers in the first few seconds with major reveals or peak dramatic moments to drive viewership.

  • The Premise: Capitalize on High-Demand Themes.
Resonate with Snapchatters by anchoring stories in popular dramatic tropes like revenge sagas, power dynamics, and family conflict.

  • The Climax: Invite Viewers into the Story with Innovative Features.
Transform casual viewers into advocates using interactive elements and custom AR Lenses that encourage peer-to-peer sharing across personal networks

  • The Happily Ever After: Drive Viewership with Creator Partnerships.
Partner with creators and celebrities to entice new audiences, establish trust and drive long-term viewer engagement among Snapchatters.

The Drama Continues: Compounding Viewership, Deepening Spend

This formula of high drama, quick hooks, and social features has established short dramas as a cultural mainstay. 68% of Snapchatters report watching more short drama content than they did last year, and 86% intend to continue watching in the future. 1

Snapchat short drama viewers don’t just view episodes; they pay to watch more. 69% of daily Snapchatters spend monthly to access short drama episodes and content, 1.4x more likely than non-Snapchatters. 2

Given current projections, this financial investment continues to deepen over time. 56% of Snapchatters increased their short drama spending year-over-year, a 1.3x higher rate than non-Snapchatters. 2 For more information on how to activate on Snapchat, please contact your sales rep.
