Snap Chatter - October 2018: Halloween Trend Takeover, and the Rise of “Weird Flex, but OK”

Spooky topics took flight this past month as Snapchatters prepared for Halloween, watched the Halloween movie, and attended fright nights all around the world.  

Global: Trending Topics

This past month, Snapchatters from Australia, France, Germany, Ireland, and the United Kingdom spent October chatting most about Halloween. Meanwhile, torrential rainfall was the top trending topic of Snapchatters in Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and United Arab Emirates. The Netherlands in particular celebrated their furry friends, while the US showed love for boyfriends across the country.

US: Trending Topics

The US was in spooky spirits this month. Top trending topics included haunted houses, pumpkin patches, spooky baskets, and Día de Los Muertos (“Day of the Dead”).

US: Trending Entertainment

Big Box releases Halloween and The Hate U Give dominated entertainment in October. Netflix’s remake of The Haunting of Hill House rounded out the top three.

US: Trending Celebrities

This past month, Kodak Black’s new track “Zeze,” and Lil Baby and Gunna’s song “Close Friends” landed them in the top 3 for most buzzed about celebrities. Conor McGregor took the number one spot through his fight against Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229.  

US: Trending Slang

The spookiest month of the year generally brings out the the weird and the awesome. This month’s new trending phrase encompasses both feelings at once. It’s for moments when your friend brags about something and you’re not quite sure why it’s impressive. For example, when your friend brags about eating an entire bag of Halloween candy in one sitting. Weird, but cool — we guess?

Netherlands Spotlight: Trending Topics

This month, we’re showcasing the trending topics from the Netherlands. While the country celebrated their favorite furry friends on Animal’s Day, they also got in the Halloween spirit by getting spooked at Walibi’s Fright Nights, and watched the country’s popular crime series, Mocro Maffia.
