Snap Chatter — November 2019: Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Baby Yoda, and ‘Gonna Tell My Kids’

This month saw Snapchatters filling their stomachs and shopping carts, fawning over cuddly creatures, and humorously rewriting history.

From scoring goals to snagging deals, Snapchatters were feeling extra competitive in November. Football fans in Iraq cheered on their favorite teams during the 24th Arabian Gulf Cup, while Snapchatters in Saudia Arabia threw their weight behind Al-Hilal FC. Down under, Snapchatters horsed around at the prestigious Melbourne Cup. Black Friday had discount-seeking Snapchatters flocking to stores and scrolling for sales in Canada, France, Germany, The Netherlands, and the United Kingdom, while Snapchatters in the United States and Mexico gathered with loved ones for Thanksgiving. Snapchatters set their sights forward in Ireland and India, as The Late Late Toy Show presented holiday gift ideas and Children’s Day had Snapchatters advocating for the rights, care, and education of future generations. Finally, Snapchatters in the United Arab Emirates paid their respects as the former deputy prime minister Sheikh Sultan bin Zayed Al Nahyan was laid to rest.

Disney+ launched to the excitement of streamers everywhere, and Black Friday had Snapchatters racing to snag the hottest deals. Veterans Day gave Snapchatters a chance to pause and show their appreciation for the armed services, while Founders’ Day had the college Greek community commemorating the history of their respective fraternities and sororities. Finally, Snapchatters gathered to celebrate Thanksgiving and Friendsgiving—the perfect chance to watch or play in their local Turkey Bowl.

Snapchatters were all about the spin-offs in November, viewing The Little Mermaid Live! and hitting the theater for Frozen 2. Netflix film American Son brought the Broadway play to screens of Snapchatters everywhere, and Doctor Sleep gave brave Snapchatters a chance to return to the Stanley Hotel. Moviegoers tasted a life of crime with Queen & Slim and The Irishman, while the 2019 National Dog Show and Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade provided some more family-friendly entertainment options.

November was for knockouts and breakouts. YouTube fans tuned in for a rematch of British YouTube star KSI’s 2018 fight with American YouTube star Logan Paul, while MMA followers watched Nate Diaz emerge victorious in the UFC 244. Snapchatters witnessed history being made as boxer Canelo Álvarez became a four-weight champion and Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson broke multiple NFL rushing records. Rapper Rod Wave’s debut LP “Ghetto Gospel Album” wow-ed Snapchatters and music critics alike, while Baby Yoda from The Mandalorian rose to instant internet fame as the latest pop culture icon.

With just two words, Gen Z has finally found their favorite retort to the older generation: “OK Boomer.” Tired of being criticized for their Internet habits and spending choices, this viral phrase picked up steam and quickly became a rallying cry among the younger generations. Funnily enough, these same youngsters are already looking ahead to when they have kids of their own and can amuse themselves with the occasional little white lie—hence, the “Gonna Tell My Kids” meme that misidentifies Baby Yoda as Danny Devito. 
Australia Spotlight: Trending Topics
There was no shortage of entertainment this month for Snapchatters in Australia. The Melbourne Cup had horse-racing fans clinging to the edge of their seats, while the highly-anticipated rematch fight between YouTubers KSI and Logan Paul saw Aussie Snapchatters choosing sides. Disney+ gave Snapchatters a new platform to stream all of their favorite flicks, and also pressing play on holiday films to get into the Christmas spirit, and Black Friday had Snapchatters channeling their inner deal-seeker. On a more somber note, Australian Snapchatters kept a close eye on the rapidly spreading bushfires and observed a moment of silence for fallen soldiers on Remembrance Day.
