Snap Chatter — May 2019: Mother’s Day, Ramadan, Game of Thrones, and Baby Lens

Snapchatters had plenty to Snap about in May as they saluted moms around the world, kicked off a period of reflection and worship for Ramadan, and discovered the Lens that makes people feel like a kid again.

May was a month of love and devotion. Snapchatters around the world—from the Netherlands to New Zealand—held a special place in their Snaps to thank mom on Mother’s Day, while countries in Europe and the Middle East observed Ramadan with fasting and prayer.

US Snapchatters celebrated graduation with a tip of their caps and showed their appreciation for the everyday people who step up and make an impact in their communities, from Nurses Week to Teacher Appreciation Week. Of course, it wouldn’t be May without Mother’s Day, a chance for Snapchatters to give props and let everyone know how amazing their moms are. They also had women’s rights on their minds, as recent headlines brought them back to the fore of national attention. On the fun and festive front, Cinco De Mayo popped, Snapchatters hit the “relax” button for Memorial Day Weekend, and Snapchat’s Baby Lens swept the nation.

When it came to high-stakes drama in sports, Snapchatters raised their mint juleps in toast to the Kentucky Derby and hunkered down for the NBA Finals.

Celebrity engagement in May skewed a bit towards the sports world. The profiles of boxer Canelo Alvarez and basketball stars Zion Williamson and Kawhi Leonard continued to rise, while Ayesha Curry stepped up to the spotlight as she defended her fam from trolls on multiple fronts. In music and memes, Tyler, the Creator delighted fans with the release of his much-anticipated Flower Boy follow-up IGOR, and Snapchatters bid a fond farewell to Grumpy Cat, an internet original.

For this month’s lesson in memeology, we turn to Jasmine Masters, superstar drag queen of RuPaul’s Drag Race and RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars fame. “And I oop!” is the sound of Masters pausing suddenly in the middle of a rant. Now “And I oop” belongs to anyone caught off-guard by a surprise interruption.

This month we’re showcasing what trended in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). May was a holy month devoted to reflection, wellness, and worship as Snapchatters observed Ramadan.
