Over half of Snapchatters are looking for creative ways to celebrate holidays in March and April

Recent findings highlight how Snapchatters plan to celebrate traditions new and old in an untraditional year.
Embracing traditions, old and new
Snapchatters are gearing up for a season of celebrating, with holidays and festivals like Easter, Ramadan, Passover, and Holi all on the horizon. One in two Snapchatters around the world plan to observe a holiday or festival this March and April,1 but many have had to get extra creative with their celebrations. In fact, 60% of Snapchatters say their plans have changed due to Covid-19.2 While festivities may look different, the desire to uphold holiday traditions remains strong as Snapchatters mark one full year since the beginning of the pandemic. Nearly 7 in 10 Snapchatters in Indonesia (78%), the Netherlands (71%), Norway (67%), and India (67%) agree that it’s very important to maintain and honor the traditions associated with the upcoming holidays.3 With safety on the brain, more than half of Snapchatters are thinking up new ways to make the holidays feel special.4 
Those looking to shake up their celebrations are prepared to spend some extra cash — most Snapchatters plan to spend the same amount of money or more on holiday purchases this year.5 Specialty foods and drinks are a top purchase for Snapchatters, along with new outfits and gifts for friends or family.6 
Sharing the celebration on Snapchat
When it comes to how they’ll celebrate, 75% of Snapchatters globally plan to mark the occasion either on their own or along with others.7 Most will be spending time with their immediate family (57%) and another quarter of Snapchatters plan to spend the holidays with friends.8 For those that aren’t able to gather together in-person, Snapchat will serve as an important platform for connection. Conversation trends in 2020 show that at the peak of quarantine, Snapchatters were still looking for ways to connect with others for the holidays. Words associated with Passover included ‘virtual’, ‘zoom’, and ‘celebrate’,9 and for Holi ‘celebrate’, ‘spirit’, and ‘colors’ were in heavy rotation.10 For Snapchatters observing Ramadan, words like ‘iftar’, ‘fasting’, and ‘donate’ dominated the conversation,11 while ‘dinner’, ‘bunny’, ‘egg’, and ‘hunt’ got the most play during Easter celebrations.12 
Easter Weekend in the US and Europe also saw a significant increase in Lens usage in 2020. In the US, an average of 31.5M Snapchatters used Lenses daily during Easter Weekend, an 18% increase compared to the yearly average. European markets including the Netherlands (32%), Norway (25%), France (22%), and the UK (21%) also experienced an uptick.13 This year, most Snapchatters say they’ll use the app to share photos and videos from their holiday celebrations, and more than half of Snapchatters in Norway (67%), the UK (52%), the US (51%), and Saudi Arabia (51%) plan to connect with their close friends and family via Snap.14  
Break out the holiday place settings
While holiday traditions vary across cultures, food and family are staples for most Snapchatters looking to celebrate. Visiting or hosting family and friends tops the list of traditions globally, and is especially important for Snapchatters in Australia (68%), the Netherlands (68%), Norway (66%), and France (65%). Cooking a special meal or recipe at home shines through as the second-ranked tradition globally, most notably in Canada (52%) and the US (50%). Another 4 in 10 Snapchatters in Norway (46%), Germany (40%), the US (35%), and Malaysia (35%) plan to decorate their home for some extra holiday flair.15
Creativity counts 
After a year marked by cancellations and changed plans, Snapchatters are welcoming a digital space to celebrate and connect with the people they care about. Brands have a unique opportunity to help Snapchatters uphold their favorite holiday traditions and find creative ways to make the season count.
