How Snapchatters are staying safe and healthy during the Covid-19 pandemic
As Covid-19 continues to unfold, we have been monitoring the behaviors and sentiments of Snapchatters toward the pandemic in order to better understand its impact on the Snapchat community. The following insights were informed by a recent in-app survey on Covid-19. This data reflects Snapchatters’ opinions at a specific moment in time, and may change as the situation evolves.
Staying Protected
As summer begins and return to a “new normal” is well underway, Snapchatters are starting to breathe a little easier—70% reported feeling concerned about the Coronavirus,1 down from 80% the month before.2 The pandemic is still disrupting daily routines, however, with over 80% of Snapchatters saying it has affected their everyday lives.3 In order to keep themselves and their families safe, Snapchatters are taking extra precautions by washing their hands more often (81%), wearing face masks for protection (74%), and social distancing from others (77%).4
Resuming Normal Activities
As stay-at-home orders are lifted and businesses are allowed to reopen, the majority of Snapchatters (69%) say they are excited to reconnect with their loved ones in-person and resume some of their regular activities.5 Many Snapchatters are excited to socialize in restaurants and bars (55%) and go to hair salons and beauty establishments (48%),6 while younger Snapchatters (ages 13-17) look forward to shopping (57%)7 and going to movie theaters (50%).8 And, as stay-at-home orders began lifting at the end of May, we observed that Snapchatters began visiting retail and restaurant locations, as visitation has slowly started to climb from March lows.9
Despite the excitement, Snapchatters are hesitant to go straight back to the way things were. Over half of Snapchatters say they’ll continue to take extra precautions by keeping their distance from others in public (55%) and avoiding large groups (54%),10 and more than a third still plan to use pickup and delivery options even when movement restrictions are lifted and businesses reopen.11 Over half of Snapchatters (60%) are looking further down the line and plan to put more money into savings,12 while 54% of females plan to store more essentials in their home as a result of the crisis.13 It will likely be a slow road back to normal for Snapchatters, but they’re taking the extra steps to make sure they stay healthy and safe in the meantime.
Staying Connected
One silver lining for many Snapchatters (58%) is that they have had the opportunity to connect with friends and family members more often during their time at home.14 In fact, 57% plan to maintain this closer connection with loved ones after their cities open up and businesses resume regular operations.15 The majority of Snapchatters (79%) have strengthened ties with text messages or chat services, while 75% prefer catching up over phone and video calls. 16 Additionally, close to a third of Snapchatters (31%) have been meeting up in-person while maintaining distance.17 Snapchatters are making the most of this unusual time, and have sought out creative methods to foster their relationships while apart.
New Spending Habits
Many Snapchatters have been using their time at home to try out new products and kickstart healthy habits. Over 40% of Snapchatters say they have bought something they typically wouldn't have,18 and over 30% have bought something new due to their friends’ influence.19 10% of Snapchatters have been focusing on their health and well-being by working out more,20 and 14% say they've spent money on personal fitness equipment or subscriptions.21 Over a third of Snapchatters have also been spending money on entertainment like movies and games to banish boredom, while some (38%) prefer getting more hands-on with hobby items (e.g., cookware, crafts, etc.).22 Over 30% of Snapchatters have purchased home goods while sheltering in place.23 Whether they’re redecorating their bedrooms or testing out a new banana bread recipe, Snapchatters are investing in items that will keep them busy and upgrade their at-home routines.
The full impact of Covid-19 is still unknown, and people everywhere are anxious to understand what the world's "new normal" will look like both in the short term and later down the road. One thing is for sure—Snapchatters plan to stay vigilant, even as their communities gradually reopen. We will continue to capture response and sentiment from our Snapchat community in the hopes of better understanding their behaviors and attitudes around this unprecedented situation.
