How Snapchatters are celebrating in this not-so-normal holiday season

Recent findings highlight how Snapchatters plan to end the year on a high note.
Preparing for the holiday season
After a challenging year, Snapchatters are ready for some much-needed holiday cheer. 57% of global Snapchatters are looking forward to kicking off 2021, highest in Brazil (73%) and the US (72%).1 For some Snapchatters, the holidays are even more important to them this year, with Spain leading this trend at 31%.2   
It’s proving harder to plan for the holidays this time around, particularly in the UK (50%), Italy (49%) and Spain (48%).3 Snapchatters in the Netherlands (45%) and Germany (41%) are the most likely to be missing their favorite holiday traditions as they search for safer alternatives.4 In the US, 70% of Snapchatters are adapting their holiday plans due to Covid-19, with 20% finding ways to gather digitally and 21% exchanging gifts remotely or socially-distanced.5
Travel plans have also changed this year as health and safety take precedence for Snapchatters. 55% of Snapchatters in Spain and Italy, 54% in Germany, and 53% in Japan report that they’re not planning to travel this holiday season.6 New Year’s Eve parties will likely be on hiatus this year due to the pandemic, with nearly 9 out of 10 Snapchatters (88%) expecting to ring in 2021 from home.7 
Honoring holiday traditions 
Celebrating with family and friends, however that may look this year, is important for Snapchatters. Snapchatters still plan on enjoying the season with loved ones in some capacity, led by Japan at 72%, Norway at 68%, the US at 66% and the Netherlands at 58%.8 In Spain (70%), the US (69%) and the Netherlands (67%), Snapchatters are queuing up their favorite holiday movies and TV specials.9 Outdoor winter activities, such as sledding and bonfires, are particularly important in Norway (44%) and the US (40%).10 
Gifting and giving back
‘Tis the season for giving in all its forms. Snapchatters are expecting to spend the same amount or more on gifts this year, especially in Germany (77%), Australia (72%), the UK (71%), Norway (70%) and the US (68%).11 About 3 out of 10 Snapchatters worldwide plan to purchase their presents earlier this year,12 and 19% are planning to DIY their gifts, cards and decorations.13 Brands can help Snapchatters show off their creativity by providing ideas and inspiration for these DIY efforts. Giving back is another important activity, and most Snapchatters across all markets surveyed report that they’ll be giving the same amount or more to charity this year - led by Brazil (86%), Malaysia (84%) and Indonesia (83%).14  
Creative ways to commemorate the season 
When they’re not crafting the perfect card or settling in for a festive film, Snapchatters love taking photos and videos during the holidays. 55% of Snapchatters in the US plan on taking photos or videos this year, followed by the UK (51%) and the Netherlands and Spain (50%).15 Taking photos or videos with digital effects is especially popular in Brazil (39%) and Italy (37%),16 while holiday lenses and filters lead in Spain (44%).17 
These activities round out Snapchatters’ creative ambitions for the 2020 holiday season. Although the holidays are undoubtedly different this year, a focus on family, friends, and a fresh start in 2021 unites Snapchatters around the world, providing opportunities for engagement, community, and connection.
